What Is A Dream?
Why are dreams so important?
Well, let’s first look at a definition of what a dream actually is.
John Maxwell defines a dream as:
“An inspiring picture of the future that energizes your mind, will, emotions, empowering you to do everything you can to achieve it.”
There’s a lot crammed in that statement, which we’re going to unpack in a moment…
But before we do, I want to ask you what your dream is?
Over different conversations and masterminds, I’ve heard some of your dreams. You’ve told me…
- “I want to be a photographer.”
- “I want to travel.”
- “I want to be a teacher.”
- “I want to adopt kids.”
Take Your Dream Off The Backburner
At the same time, I also know that some of you have put your dreams on the backburner and I want to encourage you to take those dreams off the backburner.
Take them off of the table of regret.
Dr. Richard Carlson says,
“The key to a good life is this: If you’re not going to talk about something during the last hour of your life, then don’t make it a top priority during your lifetime.”
What are you making a top priority right now? Is it the right things that you’ll be talking about at the end of your life?
Those are key questions to ask yourself to help you stay focused on your most important priorities.
Now, let’s dig into John Maxwell’s definition of a dream and also list out why chasing our dreams is important:

What’s Keeping You From Following Your Dream?
These are all important reasons why pursuing our dream is important. So, if you’re not following your dream today, what’s holding you back?
Perhaps it’s fear.
Or maybe, as Marianne Williamson has said, what we’re really afraid of is who we can truly become when we stop shrinking back:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure… We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?… We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.”
Whatever the reason is, I want to encourage you today to take one step toward following your dream.
