What We Can Learn About Transformation From Butterflies
Transformation Is Like A Spider, Frog Or Butterfly
Transformation is kind of like a spider. Or a frog.
But the most beautiful metamorphosis is definitely the butterfly, which is why so many people have written about it.
(Because let’s be honest, are people really going to write about the beauty of transformation and then post pictures of hairy spiders all over the page??
Not unless they’re an arachnophile.)
Of course, our transformation is not exactly the same as a butterfly but there are a lot of valuable principles we can learn about the growth process.
And with Easter coming up this week, we’ve been reflecting a lot about what the transformation process is like…
The 4 Stages Of A Butterfly’s Transformation
The most important thing I want you to take away from this article is this…
Transformation happens again and again.
It doesn’t just happen once. That’s the critical difference between a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset:
A fixed mindset sees growth as a destination to arrive at. And then like going on vacation at an all-inclusive resort, they sit on the beach soaking up the sun, thinking that they’ve arrived.
But that’s not what transformation is really like. Let’s look at the butterfly to learn more.
Stage #1: What We Can Learn From The Eggs
So much comparison happens through social media that it’s easy to feel like we’re not enough. But the thing is, we’re all created to be different.
Butterfly eggs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and textures. Some of round, some are oval, some are wrinkled and some are bumpy.
But at the end of the metamorphosis, they’re ALL going to be butterflies.
So you, my friend, have a unique and valuable story that the world needs.
Nor should it.
You have unique experiences, talents, abilities, skills and passions that will enable YOU to reach people that I will never be able to.
Stage #2: Why We All Need To Be Like Caterpillars
When these little caterpillars are first born, they are HUNGRY. And you know what their sole job is?
Yep. It’s like a perpetual 40-foot all-you-can-eat buffet where you only gain the weight you’re supposed to while eating all the foods that you love.
(I WISH 🙄)
Thing is, we all need to be like caterpillars at times.
In order to grow, we need to feed our minds, our bodies, our spirits and emotions with good things.
- Healthy, supportive relationships
- Listening to podcasts or reading books of people we admire
- Reading and meditating on scripture
- Eating healthy foods to support our bodies and minds
We can’t transform in a vacuum. So we need to put in all the good things we need in order to make the changes we want.
Stage #3: Just Like The Pupa, Growth Happens Even When You Think It Isn’t
This is such a fun stage of the butterfly because, on the outside, it looks like nothing is happening.
But SURPRISE! There’s a ton of changes going on where tissue, limbs and organs are transforming so that when it emerges, it looks completely different from a homely caterpillar.
That’s the way growth happens for us too.
So often we want growth to be like a microwave, where we zap some new information into our brains and we expect a brand new person to emerge the very next week.
But, my friends, this is simply NOT the way change happens.
Transformation happens in stages, like this metamorphosis.
And it often occurs more slowly than we’d like… Sometimes we don’t even see the transformation while it’s taking place because the changes are so small that we discount them.
And yet, as we do the things that are good for growth and continue to take steps, changes are taking place in our minds, our actions, our hearts, in our relationships.
Then, over time, we emerge into the next growth stage.
Stage #4: Transforming Into A Butterfly Is Just The Beginning
It may seem like one day, you wake up and realize that you’ve become a completely different person than you were a year ago or two years ago.
But the change didn’t happen overnight.
And when you reach this stage of the butterfly, where you know who you are and you’re confident in your abilities, it’s actually just another beginning.
Because everything that you’ve learned, all the transformation that you’ve gone through, is preparing you for the next thing.
And what’s the next thing? You might ask.
It’s always to add value to other people. Our growth is never just for ourselves.
Butterflies know this. Their goal during this stage is to reproduce. To multiply. That allows the life cycle of the butterfly to continue over and over again.
What’s Your Next Transformational Step?
Your next step will depend on where you are right now. And the most important thing you can do is to keep moving forward, to keep growing.
So here are a few simple questions to help you take your next step:
- Which transformational stage are you in right now?
- What’s ONE small step that you can take today to keep growing?
- Who is ONE person in your life that you can encourage in their transformational journey?
