Need To Improve Your Mood?

Are you moody? Are you saying “that’s just the way I am… I’m a moody person!”

Did you know that you have more control than you thought? We’re going to dive into the “why” in this post.

The evidence is mounting, whether you look at the Mayo clinic or the Harvard Medical Business page, or our Canadian government…

Movement improves our emotions.

So, if you’re moody, movement CAN help you with your emotions. It’s certainly helped me with my emotions!

“I Need You To Have More Good Days”

A young woman shared with me once how her husband told her, “I need you to have more good moments than bad ones.”

For a long time, she thought that she would just always struggle with her mental health and that was as good as her life would get.

But then her husband came into her life and he really encouraged her to fight for better days.

So she worked really hard at having more good days than bad days. When I asked her what kinds of things helped her, she said one of the things that helped her the most was movement.

She loved to go outside to walk, hike or run. Some days she would go biking. And during the winter she would swim laps.

She actively pursued improving her mood and one of the main things she did was physical movement. And it made a difference in her relationship.

The Habit Of Movement, Not Exercise

Now, I could say to focus on exercise but that means different things to different people. Like, my oldest daughter is a great athlete so when she exercises, she really exercises hard!

So, when I talk about movement, I’m not necessarily talking about running a marathon (unless you want to!).

A little bit of movement can go a long way.

For example, if you do just fifteen minutes a day just five days a week, it can help improve your mood. And I think you will love it so you will want to do more.

You’ll love that your mood improves. And the people around you will love the changes in you and they’ll want you to keep doing it too.

Your Next Step To Improve Your Mood

So here’s the action I want you to take — for the next five days, spend a little time moving each and every day. Find something that you love to do. It doesn’t need to be the same thing every time.

Find something you love to do so it’s not torture and you look forward to it!

Be reasonable with yourself if you haven’t done anything for a long time and start small.

#1 – SEE YOUR DOCTOR – First of all, see your doctor to get permission to move if you haven’t moved much in a long while.

#2 – START SMALL  – And secondly, start small… just ten or fifteen or twenty minutes. A little can go a long way.

Here’s what we’re really doing — we’re forming a habit. A habit that will take you through a lifetime. A habit of movement.

#3 – ANSWER THESE SIMPLE QUESTIONS – Third, I want you to answer these simple questions every time you move.

  • Question 1: On a scale of 1-10, rate yourself… how did I feel before I started moving?
  • Questions 2: On a scale of 1-10, rate yourself… how did I feel after I moved?

#4 – MOVE FOR FIVE STRAIGHT DAYS – Next, if you miss a day, go back to the start again. It’s okay if you miss a day but I want you to have five days in a row that you move. So that you can begin to form the habit of movement. Every day or at least five days a week.

It not only helps to improve our mood but there are so many physical benefits as well.
